Japan Supports Increasing Number of UN Security Council Members

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Japan supports increasing the number of permanent and non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Kishida’s Statement at the United Nations General Assembly

Kishida stated during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly: “The world is changing significantly, and we need a Security Council that reflects today’s world. Japan supports increased African representation on the Security Council, as well as the need to increase the number of permanent and non-permanent members of the Security Council.”

“Now, with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations celebrated next year, it is time to take concrete action,” he added.

Kishida explained that initiatives aimed at reducing the use of the Security Council veto, which is causing divisions within the United Nations, will help restore and strengthen confidence in the UN Security Council.

US President Joe Biden’s Statement

Yesterday, Tuesday, during his speech to the General Assembly at the UN, US President Joe Biden said that his country intends to work with other countries to increase the number of members of the UN Security Council, including permanent and non-permanent members.

78th Session of the UN General Assembly

Yesterday, under the slogan “Restoring trust and bridges of global solidarity,” the work of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly started. The summit is planned to last a week.
