Jordanian Chamber of Commerce on India’s Rice Export Ban

Introduction

The head of the Jordanian Chamber of Commerce, Khalil Haj Tawfiq, confirmed that India’s ban on its exports will not affect the price of rice in the local market.

Impact on Local Market

The official added that the decision to ban the export concerns a certain type of rice that Africa mainly depends on, but Jordan makes little mention of its share of this type in the local market.

Rice Imports in Jordan

Haj Tawfiq, head of the Food Merchants’ Syndicate, indicated that Jordan imports about 50,000 tons of Indian rice annually, noting that the Kingdom has an ample supply of rice.

Regarding the sources of rice imports, Haj Tawfik said that Jordan imports rice from several countries, including America, Europe, Australia, Thailand, and Pakistan.

India’s Rice Export Ban

On Thursday, India imposed a ban on the export of rice, which accounts for 40% of global rice exports. The decision coincides with a significant increase in the world wheat market, which renewed fears about rising food prices.

Rice as a Staple Food

Rice is the staple food for over 3 billion people. Asia produces almost 90% of moisture-loving crops.
