Guterres called the attack on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant an act of suicide

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the attacks on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant are suicidal and must be stopped.

“Any attack on nuclear power plants is suicidal. At the same time, we want the International Atomic Energy Agency to have access to the station. We hope that it will be able to use its capacity,” Guterres said during a press conference in Tokyo.

Earlier, authorities in the city of Energodar (where the station is located) said that on Sunday night, Ukrainian forces attacked the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant using Uragan missiles, and debris and the rocket engine fell about 400 meters from the power unit operating at the station.

The city administration also warned that the bombing of the Zaporozhye nuclear (electrical) plant by the Ukrainian armed forces, if the structure was damaged, would threaten the lives of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians bordering regions of Europe and Asia. .

The Russian Defense Ministry said that UN personnel continue to create obstacles to objective international monitoring of the situation at the Zaporizhzhya NPP by the leadership of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Zaporozhye NPP has been under the control of the Russian army since March last year. The Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that putting the nuclear power plant under protection is justified from the point of view of preventing the leakage of nuclear and radioactive materials, and that the Ukrainian operator continues to operate this plant.
