Ghana’s health authority on Sunday confirmed the death of two people who tested positive for the Marburg virus, a highly contagious virus similar to Ebola.
The first to fall ill was a 26-year-old man who was examined at the hospital on June 26 and died on June 27.
The second case is a 51-year-old man who was admitted to the hospital on June 28 and died the same day, according to the World Health Organization, which indicated both had sought treatment at the same hospital.
According to the World Health Organization, the results of tests conducted in Ghana came back positive on July 10 this year, but the results were checked by a laboratory in Senegal, so the cases can be considered confirmed.
For its part, the Ghana Health Authority said in a statement that “further testing at the Pasteur Institute in Dakar, Senegal confirmed the results.”
She added that she is working to reduce any risk of the virus spreading by taking action, including isolating all identified contacts, noting that none of them have had any symptoms so far.
