Former President Trump’s Attorney Believes Mike Pence Will Be a Key Defense Witness in Federal Case Overturning 2020 Election Results

Former President Trump’s Attorney Believes Pence Will Be a Key Witness in Election Case

Introduction

Former President Donald Trump’s attorney, John Lauro, stated on Sunday that he believes former Vice President Mike Pence will be one of the defense’s strongest witnesses in the federal case regarding Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Trump’s Indictment and Allegations

Trump has been indicted on four federal felony charges related to his supposed attempts to invalidate legitimate votes in the 2020 presidential race and undermine the election itself. The indictment outlines how Trump and his legal team pressured Pence to reject Joe Biden’s victory by refusing to certify the results in the Senate on January 6, 2021. Pence, however, declined and had to be evacuated when members of the January 6 mob called for his harm.

Additional Charges Against Trump

In addition to the election case, the former president is facing further federal charges regarding his possession of classified documents after leaving office in 2021. Manhattan prosecutors have also charged him with falsifying business records linked to hush money payments made to women who claim to have had extramarital affairs with him.

Pence’s Potential Testimony

While Pence has not been officially summoned to testify in the election case, Lauro expressed his belief on ABC’s “This Week” that Pence’s testimony would demonstrate that Trump did not act with criminal intent. Lauro eagerly anticipates the opportunity to cross-examine Pence and believes it will dispel any doubts about Trump’s firm belief that election irregularities led to improper results.

Pence’s Commitment to the Law

Speaking on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Pence stated that if he is ultimately asked to testify, he will abide by the law and fulfill his obligations.

Discrepancy in Accounts

During an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Lauro revealed that Trump and his lawyers initially requested Pence to “pause the voting” to allow for vote audits. However, Pence, also interviewed by CNN, clarified that this was not the complete story. Pence asserted that the day before January 6, Trump’s lawyers returned with a request to outright reject votes, which Pence considered an attempt to overturn the election. Pence emphasized that no vice president in American history had ever taken such action and that no vice president or any individual in Washington should repeat it.
