The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) has filed disciplinary proceedings against Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales after the latter kissed Spanish star Hermoso on the lips after the Women’s World Cup final.
FIFA Disciplinary Procedures
A FIFA statement on Thursday said: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee informed Luis Rubiales, President of the Spanish Football Federation, today that it will open disciplinary procedures against him in connection with the events that occurred during the final match of the Women’s World Cup, which brought together Spain and England over the weekend, ended with a 1-0 victory for Spain.
Possible Violation of FIFA Disciplinary Code
FIFA stated that the incident “may constitute a violation of paragraphs 1 and 2 of Article 13 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code”.
Call for Action Against Rubiales
Spanish star Hermoso yesterday, Wednesday, released a joint statement with the Association of Professional Players and Players calling for action against Rubiales.
“We are working to ensure that acts like those we have seen do not go unpunished, that they are punished, and that exemplary measures are taken to protect women footballers from acts that we deem unacceptable,” the statement said.
Demands for Removal from Office
The Spanish Women’s League (La Liga F) also called for Rubiales to be removed from office.
Impact on Rubiales’ Position
Whatever the decision of the disciplinary committee of the International Federation based in Zurich, it does not directly affect the position of Rubiales, except that the meeting of the General Assembly of the Spanish Football Federation, which took place called him on Friday to discuss the issue, could be a turning point.
