European Commission: Russians should not have easy access to the EU

European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson said that “Russian citizens should not have easy access to the EU for tourism and recreation.”

“Citizens of a war-torn country should not have easy access to EU tourism and entertainment,” added the commissioner, who is currently in Latvia to discuss a new European policy on Schengen visas for Russian citizens.

It is noteworthy that after an informal meeting in Prague on August 31, the EU foreign ministers reached a political agreement on the complete suspension of the preferential visa regime with Russia.

After the adoption of this political decision, the European Commission prepared and put forward practical proposals, which were approved by the permanent representatives of the EU countries on Wednesday.

The final approval of the decision is expected by the Council of the European Union on 9 September. It is likely that the decision will come into force after its publication in the Official Gazette on 12 September.
