EU says it does not recognize referendums in Ukraine

The European Union has said it does not recognize the referenda on joining Russia, which took place in the Donbass in eastern Ukraine, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions in its south.

European Council President Charles Michel tweeted on Tuesday: “Fake referendum, false results. We don’t recognize them.”

From 23 to 27 September in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, referendums were held on joining Russia.

The referendum results showed support for those regions joining Russia, with support reaching 87% in the Kherson region and over 90% in the Donetsk, Lugansk and Zaporozhye regions, according to results announced Tuesday.
