EU expresses shock after execution of demonstrators in Iran

The European Union expressed shock at the announcement by the Iranian authorities of the execution of two convicted in the case of the murder of a fighter of the People’s Mobilization Detachment during months of protests in the country.

According to the EU statement: “The European Union is shocked by the execution of Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini, who were arrested and sentenced to death in connection with the ongoing protests in Iran.”

The European Union called on Tehran to immediately stop what it called “the reprehensible practice of issuing and carrying out death sentences against demonstrators.”

The European Union also highlights the need for the Iranian authorities to expeditiously lift recent death sentences that were previously handed down in the context of ongoing protests, while ensuring due process for all detainees and ensuring that they are not subjected to ill-treatment. -treatment.

On Tuesday, Iran’s Supreme Court upheld the death sentences of Karami and Hosseini in the murder case of Popular Mobilization Forces member Ruhollah Ajamian.

Protests rocked Iran after the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini on September 16 after she was detained by Iranian vice police.

Iran’s judiciary has announced that it has handed down 11 death sentences in connection with the protests.
