Mahmoud Mohieldin, Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund and a climate change pioneer as Egypt’s COP27 chair, stressed that developed countries have failed miserably on climate change in Africa.
In an interview with Cairo Talk, Mahmoud Mohieldin said that “some coastal cities in Africa are at risk of flooding due to global climate change”, explaining that “Africa is the continent most affected by climate change.”
Moheldin stressed the need to invest in new areas of energy to counter climate change, adding: “Carbon emissions increased by 14 percent before the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, and water, energy and food are closely linked to the challenge of climate change.”
He pointed out that 800 million people around the world do not have electricity, including 600 million in Africa.
