ECOWAS Condemns Niger’s Military Junta
The Group of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned the announcement by the military junta in Niger that it intends to bring President Mohamed Bazum to justice and try him on charges of “high treason” and “undermining the security” of the country.
Provocation and Contradiction
“This represents a kind of provocation and is contrary to the will given to the military authorities of the Republic of Niger to restore constitutional order by peaceful means,” ECOWAS said.
President Bazum’s Legitimacy
She added: “President Bazum remains the democratically elected President of the Republic of Niger, recognized by ECOWAS and the international community.”
Military Council’s Announcement
On Sunday evening, Niger’s military council announced its intention to try President Mohamed Bazum on charges of “high treason” and “undermining the security” of the country.
ECOWAS Parliament’s Failure
The ECOWAS Parliament failed to agree on the forthcoming measures in Niger at a time when the group’s heads of state mobilized “reserve forces” in a sign of the inevitability of a military operation.
