Death of Italian legend Gianluca Vialli after battle with illness

Italian football legend Gianluca Vialli passed away on Friday morning after battling pancreatic cancer at the age of 58.

“We will remember you as a heart attack that no one can stop,” the Sampdoria club said in a statement on its official website.

As for the website of the Italian Federation, he wrote on his Twitter account: “Ciao Gianluca, we will remember you forever.”

Vialli, a former Italy striker, contracted the disease in 2017 and after a period of initial treatment, it seemed he had cleared it, especially during his time as assistant coach of the current Italy national team and his former Sampdoria colleague Roberto Mancini, when he won the European Cup in the summer of 2021.

However, the malignant disease returned and on December 14 he was hospitalized for treatment, as he died that Friday morning.

In his playing career, Vialli first shone at Sampdoria, where he led the club to the Italian championship (1991) and the Cup Winners’ Cup (1990) and to the Champions League final (1992). .
