China expresses alarm over NATO’s ‘nuclear alliance’

The diplomatic mission of China in the European Union expressed Beijing’s concern about NATO’s statement that it is a “nuclear alliance”, which will lead to increased regional tensions.

According to the mission statement: “NATO’s claim that it is a nuclear alliance will only exacerbate regional tensions, and China is very concerned in this regard.”

“China calls on NATO to follow the trend of the times, respond to the international community’s just call for peace, development and cooperation, correct its misconceptions and policies, and play a constructive role in promoting world peace and stability,” the statement said.

China’s concern arose after the announcement at the NATO summit in Vilnius that the alliance would take steps to ensure the effectiveness and security of the nuclear deterrence mission, including modernizing its nuclear capability.

NATO also stressed the need to ensure that interested Allies participate as widely as possible in NATO’s nuclear burden-sharing arrangements in order to demonstrate Alliance unity and resolve.
