Cheese workers in Kenya were forced to strip to prove they were menstruating, according to the British Daily Mail.
The manager of Brown’s food company called the workers together to find out which of them had thrown the used sanitary napkin into the wrong bin and forced them to undress as no one pleaded guilty.
Limuru police told local media that the manager had been suspended pending an investigation and three people had been arrested for indecent assault.
For its part, the company said in a statement: “As a result of the traumatic incident, we have launched an internal investigation to determine exactly what happened, why, and how we can appropriately reconcile employees affected by this painful unilateral decision.”
“We are directly contacting Senator Gloria Aruba, who is known to advocate for the management of menstrual hygiene… to hear from her on how best to implement the menstrual hygiene policy. We have listened and we know we must do better,” the statement said. .
The police said officers “did a thorough investigation and recorded the testimony of the victims before arresting the three suspects.” They also claimed that similar incidents had previously occurred at companies in the Limuru area.
The topic of shaming menstruation in Kenya is becoming more and more acute. In 2019, a 14-year-old girl committed suicide after being humiliated in front of class for her period.
Her mother said the teacher called her “dirty” because her uniform was soiled and ordered her to leave the classroom in Kapengik, west of the capital Nairobi. Later, she came home and told her mother about what had happened, but when she went to fetch water, she committed suicide.
Last February, an Aruba senator was asked to leave parliament because of a blood stain on her pants. She said she noticed the sign before the session even started, but “since I always advocate for the embarrassing period, I thought I should move on.”
Some MPs, including another senator, complained and called it a “disgrace” and disrespectful to others.
