Bulgarian Opposition Voices Opposition to Selling Russian Reactors of Belini Nuclear Power Plant to Ukraine

Bulgarian National Radio reported that the Vozrozhdeni party and the Bulgarian Socialist Party are opposed to holding a meeting of the parliamentary committee on energy to discuss the sale of Russian reactors from the Belny nuclear power plant to Ukraine.

“You are selling Russian reactors to Ukraine. Are you laughing at these people? Do you want the (Ukrainian) president to come here tomorrow and see how arrogantly the Bulgarian parliament behaves towards the suffering Ukrainian people? Do you expect the engineers to go?” Russians, but install and run? People changed their minds.”

“What exactly is the need for this meeting, given that the draft (draft deal) was presented only yesterday? There are no opinions on it yet. I remind you that Bulgaria does not have an energy strategy from 2020.

Representatives of the ruling coalition in Bulgaria (the Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria party, the Union of Democratic Forces, the Permanent Change bloc and Democratic Bulgaria) and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms previously proposed the sale of Russian equipment from the unfinished Belini nuclear power plant to Ukraine, including 2 reactors, 4 steam generators and 4 circulation pumps. This equipment cannot be used to complete the construction of the Bellini NPP due to the inability of Russian specialists to access the station due to sanctions.

The ruling Bulgarian majority intends to use funds from the sale of Russian equipment to pay for the construction of new reactors at the Kolodoi nuclear power plant, operated by the American company Westinghouse.

Bulgarian media reported on Tuesday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to visit Bulgaria on Thursday. The Bulgarian authorities have not yet officially confirmed or denied this information.
