Beijing: We won’t be the first to use nuclear weapons

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Beijing adheres to the principle of no initiative in the use of nuclear weapons and strives to keep its stockpile of such weapons to a minimum to ensure the protection of its national security.

“China will under no circumstances be the first to use nuclear weapons,” Fu Cong, head of the ministry’s arms control department, told the United Nations Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference.

He stressed that his country “maintains its stockpile of nuclear weapons at a minimum level to ensure the protection of national security and does not compete with other countries in terms of capabilities in this area.”
