The Bulgarian National Radio reported that Bulgarian authorities have detained a truck with 80 illegal immigrants on the Thracian Highway, located 8 km from the capital Sofia.

The police are currently engaged in the process of identifying the refugees and are actively searching for the missing truck driver.

Interior Minister highlights the rise in illegal immigration

In a statement, Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov revealed that there has been a significant increase in the flow of illegal immigration through Bulgaria during the summer months. The increase amounts to approximately 57% compared to the same period last year. Stoyanov further stated that around a thousand people are attempting to illegally cross the border into Bulgaria from Turkey.

Tragic discovery made near Sofia

Last year in February, authorities discovered a truck containing the bodies of 18 migrants, only twenty kilometers away from Sofia. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by migrants and the challenges faced by Bulgarian authorities in combating illegal immigration.

Barbed wire does not deter illegal migrants

Despite the presence of barbed wire along the 234-kilometer border between Bulgaria and Turkey, the country has recently witnessed an increase in the number of illegal migrants. This highlights the need for stronger border security measures and enhanced cooperation between Bulgaria and Turkey to effectively address this issue.
