"Are they crazy?"Germans criticize Defense Minister for New Year’s speech

Die Welt reports that German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht is at the center of a new scandal over a videotaped New Year’s speech.

The video clip, posted on the minister’s pages on social networks, angered German politicians, including Lamprecht’s colleagues in the German Social Democratic Party, and ordinary Germans due to the low quality of the image and content of the minister’s speech.

In particular, Christina Lambrecht, speaking about the conflict in Ukraine, decided to share her own impressions of the situation. “Fighting is raging in Central Europe,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of special experiences that I’ve been able to learn from, including a lot of meetings with wonderful and interesting people. I want to thank you for that.”

Meanwhile, Lamprecht’s words were drowned out by the sound of fireworks being set off in the streets of Berlin, where the video was filmed. The minister was not equipped with any additional equipment, so part of her speech was not heard.

And Ulrike Franke, a security expert at the European Council on Foreign Relations analytical center, called Lambrecht’s words unacceptable, because in the circumstances of the tragic situation she focused on meeting “with wonderful people.” And she said: “Are they crazy in Berlin?”

For his part, Christian Democratic Union politician Serap Güler said that Lambrecht’s behavior is a pretext for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to fire her from office. He explained: “Talking about the conflict and setting off New Year’s fireworks behind her back ends up in a chain of shame for her. the reputation of our country, every minute counts.”
