British media reports that the UK government is negotiating with a number of US companies to supply large volumes of liquefied natural gas from the US.
The British channel Sky News, citing its sources, said that the UK is discussing LNG supplies with Cheniere Energy and Venture Global LNG.
Sources indicate that any potential deal would be worth hundreds of millions of pounds and for at least two years.
Last year, about 50% of the gas in the British market was produced from fields in the British part of the North Sea.
In terms of imported gas, Norway was the UK’s largest supplier. LPG accounted for about 17% of imported gas, most of which came from Qatar, the US and Russia.
The UK imported 3.12 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia in 2021, representing 4% of its consumption. Last June, Business and Energy Minister Kwasi Quaring said that the UK had reduced gas imports from Russia by 75% compared to 2021.
On September 8, new Prime Minister Liz Terrace unveiled her government’s program to combat the energy crisis, which includes freezing electricity rates until 2024, granting new gas licenses in the North Sea, and resuming shale gas production.
