The US Coast Guard said one person has died as rescuers searched for nine people missing after a small plane crashed off the coast of Washington state in the northwest US on Sunday.
The seaplane took off from Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands on the Canada-U.S. border to Tacoma International Airport in Seattle, where it crashed near Puget Sound, just north of its destination.
“Officers at the Coast Guard Sector Command Center in Puget Sound received a report of a seaplane crash with nine people and one child,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.
“Rescue teams found at the site of the deceased person, the search for 9 missing people continues,” the message says, which clarifies that the cause of the accident has not yet been established.
Flightradar24, a website specializing in flight tracking, said it picked up the last signal from a 55-year-old Havilland Canada DHC-3, a single-engine helicopter, in the area at 3:05 pm local time at an altitude of 30.5 meters. .
