Zelensky instructed the authorities of Odessa to study the issue of dismantling the monument to the Russian Empress Catherine II

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky instructed the Odessa City Council to consider a proposal to move the 2nd monument to Empress Catherine in the city after receiving a petition to install a monument to a pornographic actor in its place.

Previously, the number of votes needed to consider Zelensky was combined by two petitions: one calling for the demolition of the monument, and the other for replacing it with a monument to American actor Billy Herrington, who became famous for pornographic films in the 1990s.

“In this case, the monument to Catherine II was erected in accordance with the decision of the Odessa City Council … I turned to the Odessa City Council with a request to consider the issues raised in the petition in accordance with jurisdiction,” the response on Zelensky’s website says.

In an address to local authorities, Zelensky noted the importance of “protecting national interests” and working out the issues of “cleansing public places from objects and monuments associated with the Russian Empire and the Soviet legacy.”
