Zakharova: German Goethe Institute’s Accounts Blocked in Retaliation to Actions Against Russian House by Berlin

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the restrictive measures against the bank accounts of the German Goethe-Institut inside Russia are a proportionate response to Berlin’s measures against the Russia House.

Zakharova said: “The application of the aforementioned restrictive measures against the offices of the Goethe Institute in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk is a proportionate response to the ban imposed by the German authorities in December 2022 on the accounts of the Russian House in Berlin.”

She added: “Moscow has repeatedly warned Germany about the inevitability of taking retaliatory measures in response to the restriction of the work of the Russian House in Berlin … Despite this, Berlin ignored our clear warnings.”

Zakharova continued: “Under the current conditions, the bank accounts of the Goethe-Institut in Russia can only be unblocked after the complete and unconditional cancellation of the freezing of the accounts of the Russian House in Berlin.”

And the Goethe-Institut in Moscow announced on its website that for technical reasons it has canceled language exams for the coming dates, and certificates issued by the institute usually allow Russian students to obtain a work or study visa in Germany.
