Yoav Gallant, Israel’s Defense Minister, Gets Sacked by Prime Minister

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sacked Yoav Gallant as Defense Minister because he rejected judicial amendments.

Earlier, Hebrew media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would fire Defense Minister Yoav Gallant after the latter publicly called for a halt to the judicial reform campaign.

Jewish sources have confirmed that Netanyahu is considering replacing Galant with the help of Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter, a former Shin Bet chief who also reportedly supported a suspension of the reform campaign but vowed on Sunday to vote for it.

It follows Gallant’s televised speech on Saturday, in which he called for an immediate and temporary halt to the far-right government’s controversial plan to reform the judiciary as part of the first public opposition within Netanyahu’s government coalition.

Netanyahu’s decision comes at a time when popular protests continue to reject an amendment that opponents say would take full control of the judiciary.
