WHO renames two versions of monkeypox to avoid discrimination against Africa

The World Health Organization has announced the renaming of two copies of the monkeypox virus to avoid discrimination against Africa.

The organization said in a statement Friday that a consensus has been reached to change the name of the Congo Basin version to “Version #1” and the West African version to “Version #2”.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus previously announced his intention to change the name of the monkeypox virus at the request of scientists, in particular, to change the nomenclature of virus copies so as not to distinguish between certain African countries and regions.

On July 23, the World Health Organization declared the monkeypox outbreak a global emergency. The number of injuries worldwide has reached more than 30 thousand cases, while a number of deaths have been recorded.
