The White House confirmed that the United States made a “serious” prisoner swap offer to Russia a few weeks ago, but declined to reveal details to increase the chances of a successful deal.
“The President and his team are ready to take extraordinary steps to bring our citizens home,” said John Kirby, the White House National Security Council’s strategic communications coordinator. “We’ve already shown that with Trevor Reed. That’s exactly what we did.” I’m doing now.”
Kirby called the proposal “serious” and urged Russia to take it just as seriously.
“We urge the Russians to take this proposal positively so that we can bring these two people home. I think it’s best to leave the details of this between us and our Russian colleagues,” he added.
