US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried confirmed that Washington is working to address Turkish concerns about Sweden and Finland joining NATO ahead of the June 28 Madrid summit.
When asked about Washington’s desire to agree between Finland, Sweden and Turkey before the start of the NATO summit: “We are striving for this.”
Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said earlier that his country had not made any progress in the last meeting with Turkey and that it might not be able to join NATO until September next year.
For their part, German government sources questioned the “quick entry” of Finland and Sweden into NATO, that is, at the alliance’s summit scheduled for June 29-30 in Madrid, but at the same time stressed that “there are no insurmountable difficulties” between Sweden, Finland and Turkey.
