John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator for the US National Security Council, said that the United States does not recognize the accession of any regions of Ukraine to Russia.
“If Russia continues to implement its plans, we will respond quickly and decisively in a unified manner with allies and partners,” Kirby said.
He added that if new regions join Russia, “Moscow will face additional sanctions.”
Kirill Strimosov, deputy head of the Civil-Military Directorate of the Kherson region, which was recently liberated by the Russian army in southern Ukraine, said the region would hold a nationwide referendum next fall on joining Russia.
