The US said it considers shutting down the reactors at the Russian-controlled Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine “the safest solution.”
“We continue to believe that the safest and least dangerous solution would be an organized shutdown of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant,” US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Monday.
Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi said earlier that a delegation of agency inspectors was sent to the station, expected to arrive this week.
Mikhail Ulyanov, Russian delegate to the UN in Vienna, confirmed that the IAEA delegation includes about 15 IAEA secretariat staff specializing in nuclear security and a large group of UN staff dealing with logistics and security issues.
