Washington extends punitive tariff exemptions on Chinese medical products

Washington has extended punitive tariff exemptions on some medical supplies from China for another three months as they expired on November 30.

China’s U.S. Trade Mission made the announcement on Wednesday, noting that these exemptions were first announced in December 2020 and that this latest step is “part of ongoing efforts to combat COVID-19.”

This exemption covers 81 medical devices and the exemptions were extended once in November 2021 and again in June 2022.

The exempted medical devices also include hand sanitizer dispenser bottles, plastic containers for disinfectant wipes, blood pressure monitors, fingertip oxygen monitors, magnetic resonance imaging machines and x-ray tables.

The Trade Representation added that the possibility of additional extensions or modifications can be considered “as needed”.
