Washington calls on Beijing to halt risky provocations in the South China Sea

Washington called on Beijing to stop “provocative and unsafe behavior” in the South China Sea after a Chinese coast guard vessel approached a Philippine patrol ship, causing them to nearly collide.

U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller described the footage of the incident as evidence of “China’s harassment and intimidation of Philippine courts in the disputed area.”

“We call on Beijing to stop its provocative and unsafe behavior,” he said in a statement, adding that any attack on the Philippine military would lead to the fulfillment of US defense obligations.
