Vice Biden Tours Africa to Counter China’s Growing Influence

US Vice President Kamala Harris is set to spend a week in Africa at the end of March as the United States deepens its presence on the continent in the face of global competition, especially with China.

“The visit will strengthen the US partnership in Africa and advance our joint efforts to promote security and economic prosperity,” Vice President’s spokeswoman Kirsten Allen said in a statement.

Harris’ plans followed visits from First Lady Jill Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

Harris plans to visit Ghana from March 26 to 29, then Tanzania from March 29 to 31, and her last stop will be Zambia from March 31 to April 1.

Harris has a personal connection to a third country on her route. Her maternal grandfather worked in Zambia many years ago and she visited him there when she was a little girl. Allen said the vice president’s agenda will include promoting democracy, climate resilience, women’s economic empowerment and food security.

In addition to meeting the heads of state of the three countries she visits, Allen said Harris plans to speak with “young leaders, business people, entrepreneurs and displaced people from Africa.”
