Rashida Tlaib, a Palestinian-American congresswoman, won the Democratic primary, electing the party’s nominee in Michigan later this year.
Tlaib, who became known around the world as a member of the progressive Congressional group known as “The Squad”, beat her rival Janice Winfrey 64% to 22%, with 99% of the vote counted. Her victory was announced on Thursday morning.
“No one should come into our communities and tell us how to think or vote. Our democracy belongs to us. We showed people yesterday that a million dollars in offensive advertising can’t stop us,” Tlaib said, adding, “This girl from southwest Detroit isn’t going anywhere… I’m just getting started.”
Tlaib first won congressional elections in 2018, becoming the first Palestinian-American woman in the US Congress, along with Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, becoming one of the first two Muslim women in Congress.
