U.S. health authorities announced the first death in the country this year due to a monkeypox infection in California, indicating that the deceased had a severely weakened immune system.
The Los Angeles Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the death of a Los Angeles County resident due to monkeypox infection, indicating that the patient suffered from severe immunodeficiency and was transferred to the hospital.
The Ministry of Health did not release any other information about the person, such as age, gender, or ethnicity, citing the need to protect “confidentiality and privacy.”
This is the first confirmed death from monkeypox. A Texas man, also described as severely immunocompromised, died last month after being diagnosed with monkeypox, though the infection’s role in his death is still being investigated.
