US State Department: US will not use nuclear weapons except in extreme cases

US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins said Washington would only consider using nuclear weapons as a last resort and to protect vital interests.

“The United States will only consider using nuclear weapons in extreme circumstances to protect the vital interests of the United States or our allies and partners,” Jenkins told the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference.

“The United States will not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear countries that are parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” she added.
