The United States announced its intention to provide Ukraine with $89 million for demining.
This funding will support 100 demining teams and train and equip Ukrainians for the dangerous task of clearing 16 million hectares.
“The illegal and unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to the proliferation of landmines, unexploded ordnance and improvised explosive devices over large areas of the country,” the US State Department said in a statement.
“These mines prevent access to fertile agricultural land, delay reconstruction efforts, prevent the return of displaced persons to their homes, and continue to cause the killing and maiming of innocent Ukrainian civilians,” she added.
