us drone kills veteran french jihadist fighting with al qaeda in syria

The French news magazine L’Express says that a US drone strike killed a 24-year-old Frenchman who had joined Al Qaeda forces in Syria.
Thursday morning, US officials said that the news was true.
David Drugeon, who goes by the name Daoud, was said to be the target of the raid. He has been called a “veteran French jihadist.” Drugeon was reportedly in a car when he was killed by the drone strike, which also hit a building used by the Al Qaeda-linked Khorasan Group.

Drugeon probably became a radical at a young age in France and then went to fight with jihadists in the Middle East.

John Schindler, an intelligence expert, said, “His is the unlikely story of a Catholic boy from Brittany who grew up to become an important member of Al Qaeda. He found success as a young man in the jihadist underworld that eluded him in normal life.”

“Drugeon’s family heard from him last in June 2010, when letters from an unknown place were sent to both of his parents,” Schindler also said. “He had already persuaded his mother to become a Muslim, and in his last letter, he urged his father to do the same, saying that the family would “meet in heaven” if they did.
