US Defense Secretary tells his Turkish counterpart that Ankara’s raids in Syria threaten US forces

The US Department of Defense said Secretary of State Lloyd Austin told his Turkish counterpart Hulusi Akar that Ankara’s recent raids in Syria threatened US forces.

The US Department of Defense said Austin, in a phone call with Akar, highlighted Washington’s concerns about the escalation in northern Syria and Turkey, including recent airstrikes, some of which directly threatened the security of US forces in Syria.

Secretary Austin called for an end to the escalation and reaffirmed the US Department of Defense’s “strong” opposition to Turkey’s new military operation in Syria.

On November 20, Turkey launched an air operation against the “(Turkish) Kurdistan Workers’ Party” in northern Syria, during which the Turkish Air Force attacked targets in the city of Ain al-Arab.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the operation a success and did not rule out that it would be followed by a ground operation.
