Urgent guidance from the Egyptian government after fuel price increases

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly issued urgent directives with the Minister of Local Development and a number of governors to stress the need to set fares between each governorate.

The prime minister stressed an increase in joint campaigns by interested service agencies, regional and domestic positions in each province to ensure that drivers adhere to the new fare, with the need to increase travel fares to match the increase approved by the Automatic Petroleum Pricing Committee.

He instructed Madbuli to activate the operational room in the Information Center of the Cabinet of Ministers, coordinate actions between various interested bodies, and also instructed the government complaints system in the Council of Ministers to quickly respond to any complaints entering the system about exaggeration of passenger fare growth, or a monopoly on petroleum products.

Nader Saad, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, indicated that, according to what was announced by the Minister of Local Development, the new fare increase for vehicles within the country and between provinces and other will be between 5% and 7% on all domestic and international lines within and between governorates, provided that the announcement of the New Tariffs is made this morning, Wednesday, with a clear presentation of all positions.

Nader Saad explained that there are clear instructions from Maj. Gen. Mahmoud Shaarawy, Minister of Local Development, for governors to walk past service stations and gas stations to ensure regular parking operations and prevent exploitation of citizens, while alerting executives to that they monitor and take strong action against any violations by drivers, service and public transport throughout the day, take legal action and draw up protocols for violators.

The Minister for Local Development also stressed the need to focus on displaying a poster for official vehicles and public transport that includes the route and set fare in line with the new increases, as motorists did not increase fares individually or split routes.
