Urgent: Chileans overwhelmingly reject draft new constitution

On Sunday, Chileans overwhelmingly rejected a proposal for a new constitution meant to replace the one inherited from the Augusto Pinochet era (1973-1990), according to partial results after a tally of 72% of the vote.

About 62.2% of voters said they “rejected” the proposal for a new constitution aimed at introducing new social rights.

According to the Electoral College, voters rejected the amendments in the areas of education, health care, housing, recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples and the right to abortion, and 37.8% supported the proposal.
