The press service of UN Secretary General António Guterres said that they were following the situation around the attempted rebellion in Russia with concern and urged the parties concerned to prevent further escalation.
“The Secretary General is following developments in the Russian Federation with concern and is aware of the latest reports on de-escalation measures. He calls on all parties concerned to continue to act responsibly in order to avoid further tension,” the service said.
On the night of June 24, in Rostov-on-Don, the Wagner military group captured the headquarters of the Southern Military District. This happened against the backdrop of statements by Yevgeny Prigozhin about alleged missile and bomb attacks by Russian troops on PMC camps – these allegations were refuted by both the Ministry of Defense and the FSB.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called Wagner’s actions a criminal adventure, and a criminal case was opened against Prigozhin on charges of organizing an armed rebellion.
Later, the press service of the President of Belarus reported that Alexander Lukashenko held talks with Prigozhin, who agreed to his proposal to stop Wagner’s actions in Russia and take further steps towards de-escalation.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday evening that Prigozhin would leave for Belarus and the criminal case against him would be dropped. The Kremlin said that ensuring that Prigozhin could leave for Belarus was the word of the Russian president.
