UN: Grain deal will allow to ship 23 million tons of grain from Ukraine

UN Deputy Secretary General Vera Songwe said that the recently concluded grain deal will allow Ukraine to export 23 million tons of grain to world markets.

“We are talking about 23 million tons (of grain) that will be returned to the market,” said Songwe, who is also the executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa.

The official expressed her hope that this would help reduce food prices on world markets.

Russia and Ukraine recently signed agreements in Istanbul with Turkey and the UN to remove restrictions on the supply of Russian agricultural products to the world market and define a mechanism for exporting Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.

It is planned that this grain will be exported from three ports: Odessa, Chernomorsk and Yuzhny, along safe corridors.

Grain trucks will be searched for weapons, and warships and aircraft will not be able to approach them without permission. The process will be supervised by a specially created joint coordination center.
