Stéphane Dujarric, a spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, confirmed that the UN is ready to assist the authorities of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in resolving the border dispute, if they apply.
Dujarric said: “The United Nations stands ready to help find a lasting solution to border disputes if requested by the parties.”
He noted that the Secretary General was following with great concern the escalation of violence along the Kyrgyz-Tajik border.
“The Secretary General calls on the leadership of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan to start a dialogue for a sustainable ceasefire. Both sides should make full use of mechanisms on the ground to defuse tensions,” he added.
