UN chief condemns execution of four activists in Myanmar

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the execution of four anti-government activists in Myanmar.

“The Secretary General strongly condemns the execution of four political activists in Myanmar by the military,” Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary General, said in a statement.

He noted that Guterres opposes the death penalty under any circumstances.

He pointed out that it was the first time since 1988 that the execution of the death penalty had been carried out in Myanmar, and that this was an indication of the worsening of the very poor human rights situation in Myanmar.
