Ukrainian Foreign Ministry announces severance of diplomatic relations with Syria

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced today, Thursday, the severance of diplomatic relations with Syria without severing consular relations in response to the recognition of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics by Damascus.

The ministry also announced the start of a trade embargo against Syria and the imposition of sanctions.

“In response to this unfriendly act, Ukraine announces the severance of diplomatic relations with Syria without severing consular relations in accordance with Article 2 of the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The statement says that “the Ukrainian side has also begun procedures for imposing a trade embargo against Syria, as well as imposing other sanctions against Syrian legal entities and individuals.”

Earlier, the Syrian Foreign Ministry announced that Damascus had decided to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. President of the Luhansk Republic Leonid Pasechnik pointed out that the recognition of the two republics by Syria would contribute to the mutual development of new markets and accelerate the establishment of relations in many areas.
