Ukrainian bill provides for a deterrent punishment for those who receive a Russian passport

Deputy Minister of Reintegration of the Occupied Territories of Ukraine Anatoly Stelmakh said today, Monday, July 25, that Ukrainians who have received Russian citizenship could face up to 15 years in prison.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Vereshchuk said that Kyiv is discussing the possibility of criminal prosecution for obtaining a Russian passport. “If we look at the bill that we are currently discussing, some articles indicate punishment … from a fine to even imprisonment for 15 years,” Stelmakh said live.

On July 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree simplifying the procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship for all residents of Ukraine, since it was previously limited to residents of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.
