UK Prime Minister Johnson Relays Critical Information through WhatsApp During COVID-19 Crisis

A spokesman for former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed on Wednesday that the latter had handed over his notebooks and letters during the pandemic to the government and urged officials to forward them for an independent investigation into Covid-19.

The cabinet, which is responsible for overseeing the work of the government, objects to the investigation as to whether it should turn over documents deemed irrelevant to the investigation.

“All of Boris Johnson’s documents, including his WhatsApp messages and notebooks requested by the Covid investigation, have been handed over to Cabinet in full and without editing,” the spokesman said in a statement.

“Mr Johnson is calling on the cabinet to immediately release her for an investigation,” he added.

Johnson, whose personal conduct during the COVID-19 pandemic has been heavily criticized and fined for violating lockdown rules, said he would cooperate fully with the investigation.

And after Britain recorded one of the highest death tolls in the world due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Johnson government ordered an investigation into the country’s preparedness, as well as the response of the public health sector and the economy, in 2021.

And with a general election expected next year, scrutinizing the decision-making process in detail could be politically uncomfortable for both Johnson and current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who was Treasury Secretary during the pandemic.

The inquiry will focus on how the government has handled the pandemic, especially at the beginning when the UK has been slower to respond than many European countries.

The investigation, led by former judge Heather Hallett, gave the government until Thursday evening to transfer Johnson’s WhatsApp messages and diaries.
