A local Ugandan official said on Saturday that all 25 of those killed in an attack on a school in western Uganda by members of the Alliance of Democratic Forces (ADF) militia were students.
“It has been confirmed that all the dead so far are students of the school,” said Jo Walusembi, commissioner of Kasese district, where the school is located, less than two kilometers from the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Earlier, spokesman Fred Ananga said: “So far, 25 bodies have been removed from the school and taken to Buera Hospital,” located near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
A spokesman said ADF stationed in the eastern part of the DRC attacked a high school near Buera “where a hostel was set on fire and a grocery store was looted.”
Army and police units are hunting the attackers, who fled towards the Virunga National Park, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The ADF included rebels in Uganda and then spread to the eastern part of the DRC in the 1990s and has since been accused of killing thousands of civilians.
