On his Instagram page, Tyson criticized the upcoming series, stating, “They stole my life story and didn’t pay me.”
“To the Hulu executives, I’m just a (slave) that they can auction off,” he added, using stars instead of letters to represent a slave. The platform, which is only available in the United States, is owned by Disney.
One episode of the eight-episode series will focus on the point of view of former beauty queen Desiree Washington, who, at the age of 18, accused Tyson of raping her in 1991.
The following year, the former boxing star was convicted and spent three years in prison.
In contrast, Mike creator and screenwriter Steven Rogers claimed that he was “unable to discuss” with Tyson due to working on another project that had the “rights” to publish his life story.
“I don’t like relying on one source,” he said, defending the show, which was filmed without the former heavyweight champion’s approval.
In addition to Tyson’s accusations of domestic violence, the series also chronicles the star’s childhood abuse, his mother’s death from cancer when he was a teenager, and his drug addiction and mental health issues.
“I wish he’d change his mind if he watched (the series),” Rogers concluded.
