Two soldiers killed in clash with militants in southwest Pakistan

The Pakistani army announced today, Sunday, that two of its soldiers were killed and a third wounded in a militant attack in the troubled province of Balochistan in the southwest of the country.

The army said in a statement that the wounded officer was wounded during an intense firefight with the attackers, who fled after the forces managed to repel their attack.

The statement states that the military pursued the militants in the mountains of the Khost region.

According to intelligence, six soldiers and two civilians were injured in the attack.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity so that they would not be allowed to speak to the media.

The army did not identify the attackers and neither group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Baloch rebels operating in the area have launched similar attacks against security forces in recent months and have also targeted miners.

For two decades, Balochistan has been the scene of low-level insurgency by the Balochistan Liberation Army and other separatist groups demanding independence from the central government in Islamabad.

Although the government has declared a crackdown on the rebellion, violence continues in the region.
