Two individuals publicly flogged by Afghan Taliban

According to media reports, the Taliban publicly beat two people convicted of robbery in Afghanistan’s southeastern province of Paktika.

The sentence was carried out on Saturday after the two defendants confessed to their crimes, the local court said in a statement.

In its statement, the court said: “The two convicts were publicly punished to set an example for others.”

The court decision did not mention the type of punishment, but sources said that the convicts were flogged.

In mid-November, the Taliban announced that the group’s supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzade had met with Taliban judges and instructed them to apply the movement’s own interpretation of Islamic law in their decisions.

Last month, a report released by the United Nations criticized the Taliban for publicly carrying out executions, floggings and stonings since taking power in Afghanistan, and called on the country’s rulers to stop the practice.
